A new Treatment Option

Food Allergy affects 10% of the US population. Allergic reactions to foods can be severe and life threating. Someone living with a food allergy must remain highly vigilant to all food ingredients and allergens, which has effects on nutrition and quality of life.

However, there have been exciting developments recently for those living with food allergies. On February 23rd, the FDA approved a new treatment for food allergy which is a drug that allergists are very familiar. Xolair has been on the market for 2 decades for asthma, nasal polyps, and hives. The safety profile for the drug is well known and Colorado Allergy and Asthma Centers© has considerable experience prescribing this medicine to our patients and have seen it positively impact many patients’ lives.

In a recent study, patients with food allergy to peanut, egg, milk, tree nut, wheat were treated with Xolair for a period of 16 weeks. Patients treated with Xolair needed a higher amount of their food allergen to cause a reaction. This means that patients with peanut allergy specifically, were able to eat the equivalent of two peanuts without significant symptoms upon taking this drug. Very exciting indeed and potentially life changing for many!

Xolair is an exciting option for patients dealing with food allergy! It has the potential to provide “bite protection” and decrease reaction severity with accidental exposures. Our practice will be providing Xolair treatment for appropriate patients with food allergies very shortly. Please schedule an appointment today to learn more about this life changing treatment option.
